I'm looking into the family history of the Boal family. My great grandfather was Alexander Boal, greengrocer and general dealer. His 9 children were all born in Tow Law and appear on the 1901 census. My grandfather, William, had the shop in Castle Bank that was recently a butcher's (and may still be - it's some years since I visited). My aunt Brenda Gibson lived there and in Campbell Street, my uncle Jimmy Boal lived on Deerness estate as did my cousin Julie Cowton. Her son Peter still lives in the area. I am trying to find out what happened to my grandfather's siblings, and if anyone knows of any descendants of them or my Grandmother's family - she was Georgina Lawson. I'd love to hear of any information. Thank you. jane.wren1@ntlworld.com |

Hello, My name is Susan Ridley and I have been reseaching the Ridley's of Tow-Law. I have been Lucky enough to find out a big chunk of them especially My Grt Grandfather Robert Ridley (campbell street) and his family, his eldest son was Joseph Ridley my Grandfather who married Margaret Ayton. There is one area I need to find some answers, They moved to Gateshead after marrying where I believe all the four children were born, the youngest being my Father John Robert Ridley. They returned back to Tow Law while my father was still of primary school age. If there are any Ridley or Aytons out there who would know why they moved to Gateshead it would be another chapter answered. If there are any people who went to school with my Father that would also be great, My Father was very involed with football, we have the Crook and District School medals and photos. It would also be nice to know if there would be any access to school records and if so where. Thank you for your time. I live in Staffordshire so its not easy to just spend time digging the information that would so gladly received. Happy New Year Tow Law Susan Rildey susan@ridley52.wanadoo.co.uk |

Hello, My name is Lucy Norden and I am trying to trace the history of my family - The Whitfields, who I believe were farmers in the Tow Law area during the mid to late 1800s. I noticed on your website you have both a history exhibition and a then and now section - could you recommend a local historian who I could perhaps contact for some information. Kind regards Lucy. Hello Lucy. |
Hello I wonder if you can help me to find a distant relation of mine who was a resident of Tow Law in 1992, her name is Margaret Kirk (nee Noddings). I would like to try and renew contact with her, she had two sisters Mary Ann who married Walter Suddes and Sarah (Sally) who married John White, Margaret had 3 children Elizabeth m Alex Stephenson, Joseph Alan (unmarried in 1992) and Julie Isabella m Stephen Taylor, I believe they have two children Ben and Ashley. Margaret will be about 72yrs now The last time I heard from her was in late 1992 when I was living in High Row Washington, Tyne and Wear, at that time I was researching my family tree and was focusing on Tow Law as that was where my Grandmother Annie Dodd was born, the eldest of 3 sisters she married my grandfather William Logan from Morpeth after the great war, her sisters were Amy who married George Lowson and remained in Tow Law until after his death in 1970s and Tamar who married James Davis and moved to South Shields. I moved to Hylton Castle in Sunderland in 1993, and lost contact with her, did not do much on the tree after late 1993 for many years due to other commitments. I know Margaret was living in Tow Law in 1992 and although I have a couple of letters from her I no longer have the envelopes with her address as several of my personal papers and photos have been lost over the course of two house moves. I now live in Catchgate near Stanley and have recently started looking at the tree again and accessing several sites on line to update some details, it would be wonderful to hear from her and catch up, I have tried the phone book but she is not listed. My email is denise@ddmorris.co.uk my address is 12 Cedar Court, Catchgate, Stanley DH9 8LY (it is on the site of the old primary school next to the new one) I would welcome contact from any other family members too! Many thanks Denise Morris |

To whom it may concern, My name is Lyndsay Perry and i am currently conducting research into my family's history. According to my records, my great great great grandparents were residents of Tow Law. Charles maddison was a publican in 1841 and an inn keeper at the "Iron Works Inn" in 1851. As i live in Australia i am finding it very difficult to locate information. I am hoping that someone in your organisation might know, or be able to locate, if the inn is still standing, and what it is today (are there any pictures of it?). Also, at this point any other information you may be able to provide me with would be greatly appreciated. I can provde further information if it is required. I thank you for your time, Ms. Lyndsay Perry email: missnrl@hotmail.com |
